A card reader is not required to process online credit card payments via FBO One, but is a convenience for a busy front desk.
A card reader for use with FBO One must meet the following requirements:
-
Operate as a keyboard wedge. This simply means when a card is swiped, the data on the card is translated through your keyboard into computer readable text and symbols.
-
Must read 3 tracks of data. Depending on the card type processed, data is stored in the magnetic stripe on the back of the card in one, two, or three lines.
Selecting a card reader:
Not all magnetic card readers will work with FBO One. The following have been tested and extensively used with FBO One:
-
POS-X XM95
-
ID Tech MiniMag IDMB-334133B
If you choose to purchase a different model, please check the return policy to confirm unit can be returned without penalty if it doesn't work as expected.
When selecting a card reader, make sure it is compatible with the operating system installed on the PC(s). Have your IT representative install the device and drivers required.
Test or troubleshoot a card reader:
-
Make sure it is connected securely.
-
When ready, most units have an LED indicator.
-
Open a simple text editor such as Notepad on the PC.
-
Swipe a card through the reader.
-
Confirm the text string appears in the text editor.
Most card readers are plug and play, meaning they work as expected right out of the box. If the above test steps fail, the most common issues are the swipe action taken was too slow or the unit is not well connected. If addressing these points does not solve the issue, download the configuration utility (usually available on the manufacture web site) for the unit and review unit settings.
